Numicon

We previously shared that all staff have completed a full day in-service training on Numicon and each class now has their own generous set of exciting Numicon resources, to support Numeracy and Mathematics learning.

What is Numicon?

Numicon is multi-sensory, visual approach to Numeracy learning and teaching which helps ‘make maths real’ for children by allowing them to see and understand connections between numbers.

Physical resources like the colourful the Numicon Shapes below are an important part of our Numicon teaching, particularly in our nursery and early stage classes through play experiences. The holes in the Numicon Shapes represent the numbers 1 to 10. When they are arranged in order children can easily see connections between numbers, such as ‘one more’ or ‘one less’ and number bonds.

The Numicon shapes then support children to develop more complex mathematical ideas, like how two fours make eight, three twos make six, and so on. Our middle and upper staged classes have also been using Numicon support learning of place value, division, fractions and decimals.
